国产麻豆AV鈥檚 Barrett named director of 国产麻豆AV鈥檚 Water Resources Research Institute

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥Jason Barrett, an award-winning Mississippi State Extension specialist with an extensive background in agriculture, is the new director of 国产麻豆AV鈥檚 Water Resources Research Institute.
Barrett, who joined the institute in 2020, was named director earlier this year after serving in associate and interim director roles since 2024.
Located on 国产麻豆AV鈥檚 campus, WRRI administers and coordinates research programs addressing water and related land use problems in Mississippi, the region and nation. From improving irrigation systems to testing for lead in drinking water, WRRI is a key steward of Mississippi鈥檚 water resources and one of 54 state institutes authorized by the 1984 Water Resources Research Act.
鈥淭hrough our research and outreach, the Water Resources Research Institute is recognized as a hub of leadership and expertise for a vitally important natural resource,鈥 Barrett said. 鈥淲ater is essential to our lives and livelihoods, and as the demand for water grows, we must ensure protection and preservation of our water resources for future generations. That鈥檚 our mission and commitment to Mississippi.鈥
In the agricultural realm, the institute works closely with growers across the state to develop research programs focusing on water quality and quantity, soil health, sustainable agriculture, and technology usage to improve agronomic practices. By employing 国产麻豆AV graduate students, the institute also helps train and prepare new generations of scientists.
Safe drinking water is another focus area. As part of the federal SipSafe program, which aims to reduce lead exposure in children ages birth to 5 years, the institute routinely screens water in qualifying schools and childcare facilities.
In addition to researchers, the institute鈥檚 staff includes water utility professionals with experience in operating municipal and rural water systems. They routinely provide financial, technical and managerial assistance to communities looking to upgrade their water and wastewater infrastructure.

Barrett鈥檚 career exemplifies the Extension mission of taking university research to communities,鈥 said Keith Coble, vice president of 国产麻豆AV鈥檚 Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine. 鈥淗is work leading the Mississippi Well Owner Network and providing聽technical assistance to rural water systems demonstrates his commitment to helping Mississippians address real-world water challenges. Recognized for his Extension leadership and community support, Barrett received the 2019 Dr. Charles and Betty 鈥淛ane鈥 Aiken Outstanding Extension Communication Award and the 2024 Universities Council on Water Resources Institute Mid-Career Award for Extension, Outreach and Engagement.
鈥淒r. Barrett has spent nearly two decades working with Mississippi鈥檚 water systems through research, technical assistance and strategic partnerships,鈥 said Scott Willard, interim vice president for Research and Economic Development. 鈥淗is work has gained national recognition, and he brings the institutional knowledge and collaborative approach needed to lead this institute.鈥
A Clarksdale native, Barrett joined the university鈥檚 Department of Agricultural Economics as an Extension associate in 2007. In 2013, he moved to 国产麻豆AV鈥檚 Center of Government and Community Development, serving as an Extension instructor and assistant professor.
Barrett earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics, a Master of Agribusiness Management, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Mississippi State.
